Flood Damage Service Company – Learning How to Choose the Best

Posted by gbrillstom on December 23, 2008

There are a good number of flood damage service companies especially in flood prone areas. Even before another storm or hurricane or overflowing of river strikes your neighborhood again, it would be a good idea to keep a few number of different flood damage service companies you can rely on in times of disaster. As such, when your house is flooded again, you don’t have to spend time anymore finding a flood damage restoration specialist in the yellow pages or on the web. Remember that if you want to limit as much structural damage to your home as possible, you have to act against time. Having emergency contact numbers at the ready is one way of hastening up response action to flood damage.

Prior to any major disaster, shop for a flood damage service company. This is the best way to get the best quality and the best price for your home.

One way to narrow down your options is to ask your insurance carrier for flood damage service companies they can recommend. Alternatively, you can leaf through the good old yellow pages for a list of flood damage service companies. The internet is also a good resource. In fact, it is a more comprehensive resource for each information that you need. Many companies also have business web pages, complete with company profile, contact number, list of services, emergency response time, and chat lines. Look into the company profile. Check out how long the restoration team has been in the business. The longer the family has been in the industry, the more experience they have, the more likely the company has perfected its trade. Check also the kind of equipment they use to render the services that they offer. You wouldn’t want also company that uses old equipment models because that would mean they work less efficiently than the latest models. Look for companies that have state-of-the-art equipment.

You can also ask for references from friends, neighbors, and family. There’s no better judge of quality of services than former clients of companies. For the same reason, check out testimonials and peer reviews to find out which are the flood damage restoration companies the market trusts.

Check out with the Better Business Bureau if the company is legit and if the company has the certification and training in flood damage service. Find out from the bureau as well if the company has any history of customer complaint.

Once you have narrowed your options to 3 or 4, call the company and find out how they respond to flood emergencies. Though you can ask for the price quote afterwards, it would be better to postpone this until after a flood so you could describe the extent of the damage to the company. Flood damage service costs are always circumstance-based. How bad the damage in your home is will determine how much you will spend on professional services. Of course, the company’s base rate will also determine the overall cost. This is why there are expensive companies and there are affordable companies even though cleanup and restoration process often proceeds in the same way.

Posted by gbrillstom on December 1, 2008

Seeing your home so muddy and filled with dirty water after days or nights of flood and heavy rain, the first thing that will come to mind is whether one’s belongings mainly the appliances and other high-end gadgets are still functional. Even if they are still in good shape, these may need to be repaired. On second thought however, you realize that there are some things that are more important than your gadgets and these are your important papers or documents. And that’s the time you begin to panic and start locating them one by one, giving you more headaches. No need to worry though; now there is a solution to keeping your documents clean and dry and that is through document drying. Document drying is the process in which your documents are dried up and restored back to shape. The following are some easy and basic tips on document drying.

Personal documents and Identification Cards

Examples of these documents are birth certificates, marriage license, land titles, and others. The primary thing that you need to do with these documents once these have been wet is to take them out of the water, lay them on a dry flat surface and examine the damage done. Check if the text documents are still readable or not. If it is, then proceed with the document drying process. If not, then say goodbye to these papers and take action in having them replaced. For those that could still be salvaged, you will need dry air in restoring of documents by either hanging it outside or in front of a fan. Using of hair blower can also be used to dry up your documents but you have to be very careful to avoid electrocution. Once the documents have been dried up, lay them again on a dry flat surface until they return to their original shape.

Photographs

These are important to us since these are our reminders of some beautiful memories with loved ones and friends. It can bring back both happy and sad times in an instant, and can also bring one more closely to those loved ones far away. Photographs tell stories like from the time of one’s birth, growing up and going to adulthood. That’s why these things are also important to us. You can restore your photographs also through document drying which can be done even without restoration personnel. The first thing to do is to take all the photographs out of the water and examine the damage. If the images can still be identified, then the photographs can be restored. If not, bring it to a restoration expert. For restorable photographs, place it on a dry flat surface or blotting paper or paper towel to speed up absorption. If you’re using blotting paper, place the paper one at a time, first on the front side then later on, on its back side. Then as the pictures dry, allow at least one day of keeping your photographs completely moist-free. Avoid drying them directly under the sun as it can cause your photographs to fold and lose quality and texture. Never put these back into frames or photo albums right away once it has completely dried.

From the instructions given above, you can see that document drying is quite easy and can be done by anybody. No more worries, no headaches and no cost.

Flood Damage Cleanup – A Short Introduction to Flood Damage Cleanup

Posted by gbrillstom on December 1, 2008

Floods are defined as overflow of water which submerges the land. One can also call it an inflow of tide. Flood damage cleanup is a task you will be familiar with intimately if you live in flood prone areas. After a flood, it is imperative for everyone to cleanup the areas. This is extremely important as most floods leave grounds with various virus and bacterial growths. This can easily lead to epidemics and death. Flood damage cleanup is extremely essential as it may cause deaths due to allergies and other diseases.

Some ideas which will help you in flood damage cleanup are listed below:

First thing you need to do for flood damage cleanup, is to pump all the flood water out. You can use water pumps or buckets, depending on what is handy and on the quantity of water, affected areas etc.

Before pumping water out of basement, you must note that if the pressure on walls outside becomes more then inside, they may collapse. So, for basements and other such confined places, throw water gradually and not in one go.

You will now need to evaluate each piece of furniture, whether it can be cleaned or is spoilt completely. Dispose of every thing you think cannot be cleaned.

Begin cleaning by using an air cleaning device. This may not be sufficient, but is a good starting point for flood damage cleanup. Try to avoid any device working on Ozone, as people who suffer from lung diseases may have some trouble.

Once you have removed water, look for damp patches. You will need to take care of damp patches as soon as possible as fungal growth is very fast in such areas.

Now you can begin washing all the floors, doors windows etc. Post this act, you can start disinfecting the entire area.

Try and facilitate influx of fresh hair in all rooms. This will remove any traces of dampness.

Use chemically effective but safe disinfectants and washing agents. You can get all information by reading labels on bottles.

Flood damage cleanup must be undertaken by healthy individuals only. If you suffer from any allergies or lung diseases, be very careful while cleaning.

Flood damage cleanup will involve removal of dust mites which may grow due to long time water clogging.

If the floods were extensive, flood damage cleanup may not be possible at individual levels and you will need to call in professional services and cleaners.

Flood damage cleanup is an expensive process. As soon as you have completed part cleaning, call your insurance company. Their advisors may wish to visit and then evaluate your claims. You should not delay their visit much, as they also need to see the extent of damage done to your property, for paying out the full money. You should take extra care of infants and elderly people while cleaning, so that they are not exposed to wet surfaces and goods. Flood damage cleanup is a stressful exercise but if you carry it out in a phased and planned manner, you can restore most of your property without much damage and in a short time.

Smoke Damage is a Common Thing in Industries

Posted by gbrillstom on November 27, 2008

Smoke damage is particularly prevalent in many types of industries like chemical, iron and steel and manufacturing. The nature and extent of smoke damage is different for all industries and we should analyze them properly before we take any measures against it. So we start off with chemical damage caused in industries kike chemical manufacturing and fertilizer plants. The nature of smoke damage in chemical factories is corrosive. The smoke emitted from chambers cause extensive damage to everything present in side the factory. Chemical smoke contains gases like chlorine and carbon monoxide. Chlorine reacts with almost everything it comes in contact with. So the walls of the factory and machines will be damaged due to the release of smoke form the factories. The walls of the factory are the worst affected and that is very much visible with naked eyes. The chemical smoke will also damage a human being’s body and in particular the nervous system which will be damaged the most.

We have discussed the causes and nature of smoke damage in factories and now we will discuss about the various ways we can stop the damage. This damage is inevitable but it can be minimized with the proper use of technology and manpower. The government can also play a major role in preventing smoke damage, particularly pollution. Pollution is also a type of smoke damage. Smoke damages can be prevented by the use of special devices which will absorb smoke.

We need to be a lot more illustrious regarding this topic. Smoke absorbers are of many types and the ones used in industries cannot be used inside our houses. The houses have smoke absorbers to absorb cigarette smoke in particular.

In industries we need smoke absorbers to absorb large quantities of smoke, unlike domestic ones. The smoke absorbers used in industries can absorb both harmful as well as inert gases. The ones which absorb poison gases have special motors and special suction tubes. They are fitted with special filters which absorb particulate matter to stop them form being released into the air.  The smoke absorbers used in factories are bigger in size and need a lot of energy to run. They are high power consumption devices which are not suited for domestic use.

The use of high technology equipment also prevents the release of smoke into the atmosphere. The new age machinery has special techniques to minimize smoke production. The old and outdated machines produce the maximum amount of smoke and that smoke causes a lot of damage to the environment and causes smoke damage.

Smoke damage should be controlled to prevent the unnecessary expenditure involved in replacing old machines damaged by smoke. The proper use of equipment will stop smoke damage and will also save a lot of money. Professional help can also be sought to control and stop this damage.

Government policies also play a major role in preventing smoke damage. Strict government policies will prevent the spread of smoke and the damage caused due to it. Personal initiative is also important for these cases.

3 Simple Techniques for Water Removal and Extraction

Posted by gbrillstom on October 23, 2008

Are you worried about the damage that your leaky roof, your broken pipe or your overflowing tank may cause? Are you unsure about how to go about removing and extracting water? Are you troubled with how expensive it would be to hire professional services for water removal? Well, fear not. There are certain things which you can do on your own at home for water removal and water extraction.

Three of the simplest and cheapest ways for carrying out small water damage repairs are air drying, freeze drying and dehumidification.

What is air drying?

The simplest of all methods is air drying. Air drying is nothing but drying your belongings under the sun and in the air. This oldest and the most trusted method is an effective way of water removal. It will not only dry out your personal possessions but also save them from further water damage.

Use a flat surface for air drying. Lay down all the wet items side-by-side. Let mattresses and cushions be kept in a tilted way so that both the sides are equally exposed to the sun and the air.

Water stains can cause damage to your carpets, curtains and upholstery and make them look worn out. Wash them properly with water and then allow them to dry under the sun and in the air.

However, do not put books and photographs in the sun. They are sure to get damaged. Instead keep them inside where they can dry in the air.

Make sure that the air gets properly circulated. If possible use a fan for this. This will help in reducing the moisture and humidity which can slow down the process of air drying.

What is freeze drying?

Freeze drying is usually effective for things which cannot be air-dried. These include bound books, art work and family treasures.

In freeze drying, professionals often use industrial freezers for water removal. However, at home, a no-frost home freezer can prove to be as effective as those heavy industrial freezers.

For freeze drying to work, keep the freezer temperature below -10 degrees Fahrenheit. This will protect the items from losing their original shapes and sizes. Make sure that the items are spread out rather than kept one on top of the other.

Bear in mind that freeze drying is time-consuming and can take from weeks to months until complete water removal is achieved.

What is dehumidification?

Simply put, dehumidification involves removing humidity from inside the house. You do not need huge commercial dehumidifiers for this purpose. Simple things can help you remove the humidity from your house.

The simplest thing you can do is to let sunlight and air come inside the house. So open all your doors and windows. This will help in reducing the humidity.
Keep carpets and rugs outside since they tend to absorb excess moisture.

Use air vents and exhaust fans in the kitchen, bathrooms and all other areas which easily get water damaged.
Use air-conditioners. They will help control the temperature and the humidity in the house.

Water damage needs your immediate attention. If quick steps are not taken, it can lead to further damage inside your house and end up making living in the house unbearable. So use these three simple techniques for water removal and extraction and save your precious house.

3 Categories of Water Damage

Posted by gbrillstom on October 23, 2008

Whether you have experienced a simple water leak, flooding in your basement, or extensive flooding in your house due to a hurricane, you would inevitably encounter water damage and need to have it attended to immediately. Water damage, unless immediately arrested, can result in the total loss of your valuables as well as a huge expense for restoration. The first thing you must know is that there are three categories of water damage. The type of removal, cleanup and restoration you will have to do will depend upon which category your water damage falls.

The first category is called clean water damage. This occurs as the result of rainwater, or perhaps a pipe bursting in your home. Clean water usually does not contain contaminants that would be harmful to living things. Very often, it can be cleaned by locating the area where the source of the leak is, and stopping that leak. After you stop the leak water extraction should take place immediately afterwards. This will involve getting all the standing water out and allowing the place and all the things in it to dry.  Carpets that have been under water for more than three days should be removed and replaced. The concrete slab underneath it will also have to be treated and dried to ensure that no moisture is left that will invade the new carpet. The drying period for concrete can take up to five days.

The second category, called gray water, is where there is some level of contamination in the water. This kind of water is unsafe for human consumption. Gray water usually comes from flooding due to the break down of household appliances, such as your dishwasher, washing machine, or refrigerator. It could also come from the overflowing of a toilet that has no human excrement in it, or a chemically treated source of water such as an aquarium or a waterbed. Overflows of gray water should be treated immediately, and with safety precautions. Unless you are sure of what you are doing, it is best to call a professional – maybe a plumber or cleaning service – to extract the water. The area will then have to be dried out and some sort of antimicrobial treatment should be applied to the wet area and objects.

The third category is black water, and is the most dangerous category of water. Black water usually occurs from floods, a sewer backup, or the overflow of anything that contains contaminants that are harmful if consumed, such as a toilet with human excrement in it. It is often difficult to distinguish between grey water and black water, and the color or look of the water can be deceptive. If you are not sure of the cause of the flood, we suggest that you contact a professional, who will assess the type of water you have and take measures to clean it up appropriately.

Water damage of any category, unless treated immediately, can cause the growth of organisms that are harmful to your health. Even if what you have is clean water damage, mold and mildew usually grow within hours and could affect your home. It becomes more dangerous the longer the water – whether clean, gray or black – is left to stand. Grey and black water damage, because of the contaminants in it, can cause chemical reactions aside from mold growth, and are more dangerous.

If the water level in your home is more than one foot deep or larger than 10 square feet, call a professional right away. Dilly dallying or waiting for it to subside may be harmful to your health as well as that of your family members. By taking action quickly, you will be able to mitigate the extent of the damage, salvage more possessions and keep you and your family’s health safe.
